Local Rebuilding Together affiliates repair unsafe decks, porches, porch stairs and railings for qualifying veterans at no cost, so there is nothing to repay. The help is delivered where an affiliate operates and has funding, and homeowners must meet that affiliate’s conditions. Published examples include deck and porch work at the homes of Mr. Donald, Samantha, Andrew—also known as “Rambo”—and Ken. This guide explains how to find the local affiliate and what it checks.
This is a no-cost repair service, not a loan. Local affiliates arrange and carry out repairs using resources such as donations, national programs, corporate partners, licensed contractors and volunteers. No loan is made to the homeowner, and no repayment is due. “No repayment” here does not mean debt cancellation, a loan with zero payments or cash paid to the homeowner.
The work may address rotted deck or porch boards, loose or missing railings and handrails, broken or rotted porch stairs, or unsafe entry steps. The housing inspector assesses the home and sets the scope. That is why documented projects range from stair and railing repairs to replacement stairs or a repainted deck; an application does not promise a particular repair.
The national Veterans at Home program supports no-cost preventive home modifications and repairs for veterans and their families. A veteran household or surviving spouse may be served where the local affiliate’s program allows it. Nationally, Rebuilding Together says that household eligibility is typically set at or below 80% of local area median income, but each affiliate sets its own rules and provides service directly.
Rebuilding Together describes its work with local affiliates as essential home repairs “at no cost,” and its National Rebuilding Month 2026 page calls the repairs “zero-cost.” Rebuilding Together Houston likewise states that its repairs are at no cost to homeowners, that it will not place a lien on the property, and that staff and contractors will not ask the homeowner for money. These are repair services funded through organizational and community resources—not a grant paid to the resident. (rebuildingtogetherhouston.org)
Deck and porch repairs do not appear on the national FAQ’s list of common repairs, so the clearest evidence is local affiliates’ published service descriptions and completed projects. Kansas City lists deck or porch repairs and wood rot repair; its services also include low-rise steps and stair, deck and railing repairs. Rebuilding Together Pacific Northwest lists small carpentry repairs such as broken or rotted steps and deteriorating porch boards. Greater Des Moines gives examples including steps and the removal and installation of back steps. (rebuildingtogetherkc.org)
The national Veterans at Home program says it works through local affiliates to improve safety and accessibility for veterans and their families. Rebuilding Together reports that its network has completed more than 13,000 projects for veterans and their families since 2010. These figures describe the organization’s program and history; they do not establish whether a particular local affiliate has funding available. (rebuildingtogether.org)
The named projects show that this type of exterior safety work has been done for veteran homeowners. In Alexandria, Virginia, contractors working with Rebuilding Together D.C. · Alexandria and Beacon Building Products “removed and replaced the rear stairs leading from the porch to the backyard” and “constructed a new 4’x3’ platform and new stair well.” The project page describes the repairs as no-cost. (rebuildingtogether.org)
In Marietta, Georgia, Rebuilding Together Atlanta volunteers repaired front steps and stained a fence at Samantha’s home; a contractor replaced the roof and fixed the rear door. The June 29, 2026 account says the improvements were made at no cost to her. In East Austin, Rebuilding Together’s account of Andrew, or “Rambo,” says the project “repaired Rambo’s decaying porch.” That page also describes other home repairs, rather than promising a standard porch scope. (proxy.rebuildingtogether.org)
In Austell, Georgia, Rebuilding Together Atlanta and Lockheed Martin volunteers addressed trip hazards and installed a ramp at Ken’s home. The account says they repainted the deck, with the new paint providing protection from the elements; it does not say that the deck was rebuilt. Together, these pages document repairs carried out by the named local affiliates. They do not show that your affiliate has current funding, will approve the same work, or can provide a completion date. (rebuildingtogether.org)
The first step is to locate the affiliate covering the home’s address using Rebuilding Together’s Find Your Local Affiliate map. The national FAQ directs homeowners to find the closest affiliate and contact it directly to apply. The national office does not inspect or repair each home itself; the local affiliate sets its service area, capacity, funding and application requirements. (rebuildingtogether.org)
Tell the affiliate that the applicant is a veteran and describe any service-connected disability or mobility needs in the household. Mention whether a surviving spouse is applying, because eligibility for spouses depends on the local program. Ask which application and documents it requires, and whether its funded work includes the specific deck, porch, steps or railing concern.
Rebuilding Together Houston publishes one example of the process. It first screens the homeowner’s application and supporting documents. A housing inspector then visits to assess the home and set the repair scope. Licensed contractors handle specialized work where needed. After contractor work, an inspector provides a completion report for the homeowner to review and sign; volunteer work may follow. Other affiliates may use a different process. (rebuildingtogetherhouston.org)
Conditions vary by affiliate and program. Houston’s published criteria include being a full-time resident and owner of a single-family home, not owning more than one property, and being current on property taxes or having an official payment agreement. Its veteran program also applies a local income threshold. These Houston requirements are an example, not a nationwide eligibility rule. National guidance says household income eligibility is typically at or below 80% of local area median income; the relevant affiliate confirms its own threshold. VA disability compensation or a VA pension counts toward household income, so include it when reporting income from all sources. (rebuildingtogetherhouston.org)
Before contacting the affiliate, gather the items it may need to screen the application:
Describe the safety problem plainly. That helps the inspector understand how the damage affects entering, leaving or moving around the home; the inspector still determines the scope. Funding and capacity are limited: Kansas City says its ability to provide services depends on available funding. No application is certain to be accepted, and no completion date can be promised. (rebuildingtogetherkc.org)
The practical next step is to open the affiliate map, identify the affiliate covering the address and contact it directly to begin screening. Have ownership proof, property-tax information, household income records and dated photos ready, and mention veteran status at first contact so the affiliate can check its Veterans at Home funding. If a rotted porch or collapsed step makes entering or leaving unsafe, the United Way housing-expense resource page also provides an online starting point for finding local housing help.
